He was replaced by Joe Denly, in line with ECB protocols, although as a like-for-like replacement he was not allowed to bowl. Compton himself hurt his wrist and was unable to field, or open.Kent were buoyed by two early wickets as Quinn struck in the fifth over of the morning, getting Jennings caught at first slip by Ben Dawkins for 17 and Josh Bohannon went for a fifth-ball duck, edging Joey Evison to Dawkins, who caught him at the second attempt.Although the ball regularly beat the bat, Wells and Marcus Harris put on 82 for the third wicket, Parkinson breaking the partnership when the latter charged at him and was stumped by Harry Finch for 32, leaving Lancs on 118-3 at lunch. The visitors regained the momentum until Matty Hurst played on to Quinn and was bowled for 24. Parkinson then had Wells caught behind.Quinn caught and bowled Michael Jones for four, then got George Balderson lbw for 11.When Parkinson had Tom Bailey caught by Jaydn Denly at first slip for three, Lancs were eight down and still 98 behind, but Hartley was dropped twice off Parkinson, by Finch and Mo Rizvi, and alongside Will Williams he steered Lancashire to 254-8 at tea.The deficit was down to 33 when Williams was lbw to Jaydn Denly for 26, but Hartley responded by smearing Parkinson for six over mid-wicket to bring up his 50, and the visitors were almost level when he hit Parkinson down Ekansh Singh's throat. With Compton absent for Kent's second innings, Jaydn Denly and Dawkins immediately went on the attack. The former pulled Hartley for six over mid-wicket and passed fifty with an elegant reverse-sweep off Wells, shortly before stumps.Dawkins then survived a loud appeal in the final over, as Bailey bowled a tricky over of off-spin.Report supplied by ECB Reporters' Network, supported by RothesayRelated topicsLancashireKentCounty CricketCricketMore on this storyGet cricket news sent straight to your phoneComments can not be loadedTo load Comments you need to enable JavaScript in your browserCommentsJoin the conversation17 commentsShowLatestOldestHighest RatedMost RepliedGComment by Grizzly at 19:48 9 SepGrizzly19:48 9 SepHollioke's role shouldn't be ignored here, he has pushed the youngsters and with more experience they'll become better cricketers, I'm not sure they would have had the opportunities under previous regimes. Finally the first team has a strong nucleus of academy graduates...Reply161Show comment linksDComment by Dave Yeates at 20:22 9 SepDave Yeates20:22 9 SepI can't remember when both Kent's openers were teenagers, but after what's been another dreadful season for them, there does look to be some promise - and with Northeast returning next year, presumably as captain, some light on the horizon for Kent's long-suffering supportersReply152Show comment linksRComment by runner 62 at 21:43 9 Seprunner 6221:43 9 Septo Dave Yeates"I can't remember when both Kent's openers were teenagers, but after what's been another dreadful season for them, there does look to be some promise - and with Northeast returning next year, presumably as captain, some light on the horizon for Kent's long-suffering supporters"SNE will not be captain next year, need him to concentrate on run scoringReply21Show comment linksCComment by Critiquer at 20:59 9 SepCritiquer20:59 9 SepGive credit where it is due, much much better day for Kent. Bowling at last successful and the two young openers scoring well when it was needed without losing their heads and wickets. The question is, will the side be able to continue the progress for the next few days or will the weather or Lancashire be the winner. Come on Kent, now's your chance to get a rare win.Reply130Show comment linksCComment by Clive at 21:03 9 SepClive21:03 9 SepDespite the this season, finally the future is bright. We have missed him sadly!Reply100Show comment linksMComment by Mikey at 21:03 9 SepMikey21:03 9 SepProbably the best day of cricket at Canterbury this season, in fairness there was not much to beat. Fair play to the young players, upstaging some of the senior players.Reply101Show comment linksDComment by Desdinova at 19:41 9 SepDesdinova19:41 9 SepWrll batted Jaydn and Ben ????Reply91Show comment linksMComment by mhurst18 at 19:48 9 Sepmhurst1819:48 9 Septo Desdinova"Wrll batted Jaydn and Ben ????"Both look exciting young talents, positive batsmenReply91Show comment linksBComment by Backintheday at 19:41 9 SepBackintheday19:41 9 SepA rare day of positives for Kent. Ever the pessimist however, I’m now expecting a day three collapse or for the weather to ruin our chances of a win.Reply62Show comment linksEComment by evolving22 at 07:41 10 Sepevolving2207:41 10 SepOne of Kent's better days this year today could easily be a lousy one though!!Quinn exemplified senior player savvy & skills. So lacking elsewhere!Sad about Compton and Muyeye. Conceded too many lower order runs for the umpteenth time last years. After bowling hundreds of overs Parkinson's control should be better!!Not sure why Evison did not have a go at the tail as he was excellent again!Reply20Show comment linksAComment by Andy at 20:23 9 SepAndy20:23 9 SepLancs. such a poor team.
